WOB supports the empowerment of women and girls everywhere.  This is why at its Spring 2010 Board of Directors meeting, Women on the Border voted to approve the development of a public health education project led by Camille OÕReilly, M.P.H. and a registered nurse who specializes in the rehabilitation of spinal cord injuries.

Nurse and educator OÕReilly has been involved in local movements in Oaxaca City to educate and empower the disabled in Mexico for several years.  She is a longtime supporter of WOBÕs efforts to address through education and training maquiladora workers around issues of personal health due to stressful working conditions as well as community and public health concerns.  She has been on delegations to the border twice and each time provided insights to travelers and to WOB about public health and stress management issues for working women.

Beginning late August 2010, and for at least two months, Ms. OÕReilly is taking her skills to Haiti to help train nurses, doctors and physical therapists on recovery aspects for those injured or disabled as a cause of the devastating earthquake that has left hundreds of thousands of people homeless.

WOB is informed that to date the dangers of rape, sexual assault and devastating STDs for girls and women forced to live and survive in the tent cities in Haiti is grave.

WOB supports this two month volunteer project in Haiti that will cost Ms. OÕReilly about $8,000 to fund.
